Only back when I had a computer guru to fall back on when I?d get a virus from such sites that the AV program missed. He?s gone now, ditto me gambling on AVAST protecting me since so many got past the fee paid McAfee, Norton over the years, so I avoid them like the plague and no clue where I picked it up unless it was back when a buddy?s computer got hacked via his Facebook account and neither yahoo Mail?s Norton AV and AVAST missed this one in the clean-up.Originally Posted by Phil-G

Hmm, I just did, which popped up an optional information form to fill out, but the SUBMIT button is grayed out regardless of whether I type in anything.
Between opening Chrome causing a re-boot and now this, in my ignorance/paranoia I’m wondering if AVAST is hacked.

If you ever come across some nasty malware like rootkits you can't remove.Go to a site like Bleeping computer they will remove it for you for FREE !
Check out the Security Section: "Am I infected What should I do" or the "Virus,Trojan,Spyware Removal Logs" to give you an Idea of what to do.

FWIW - Chrome worked fine for me w/o alert errors.
Some malware uses Windows restore to reinstall itself. If it keeps coming back try turning off restore then clean.

True computer geeks use linux. Then one doesn't need to worry about windoze viruses.
I amazed at how many home users unknowingly do their day to day work with Admin privies turned on. So I always recommend setting up a non-priveleged user name and do all the mundane stuff from it. Then only use Administrator for things like adding new users, installing new application packages, system upgrades, etc. In a corporate environment, this is SOP, and has been for many years.
Back when I used to use WNT4, I got a virus like that. I found its files in my System directory. But it was smart enough to know when I would try to move them to the trash. It would rename itself to something else. So I used the cygwin shell and removed the files. Problem solved. And yes, for some reason I can not remember, I had given myself Admin privies "just for a few minutes", then forgot that I had done so and left them on....Some malware uses Windows restore to reinstall itself.
